Check your numbers first

Run /t. The Town Size line shows how many town blocks you use and your maximum, and Bank shows your money. Most claim errors come from one of those two.

Not enough available town blocks to claim this selection.

Why it happens

Your town has reached its claim limit. The limit is 8 town blocks per resident, so a solo town can only hold 8. This also happens when a /t claim rect or /t claim circle selection is bigger than what you have left, even if you have a few blocks free.

How to fix it

  1. 1Run /t and compare Town Size with your maximum.
  2. 2Recruit more residents with /t add <player>. Each one adds 8 town blocks.
  3. 3Claim one chunk at a time with /t claim, or use a smaller radius. /t claim rect 1 is 9 blocks, /t claim rect 2 is 25.
  4. 4Free up space by unclaiming land you don't use with /t unclaim. There's no refund.
  5. 5Bonus blocks can't be bought on Survival, so /t buy won't help.

Town cannot afford to claim X town blocks costing Y.

Why it happens

Claims are paid from the town bank, not your own balance. Each town block costs $25.

How to fix it

  1. 1Put money in the bank with /t deposit <amount>.
  2. 2Check the bank balance with /t.
  3. 3Claim fewer blocks at once.

Selected area not attached to edge.

Why it happens

New claims must touch land your town already owns, side by side. Corners don't count.

How to fix it

  1. 1Stand in a chunk directly next to your town's border and try again.
  2. 2Use /towny map to see exactly where your border is.
  3. 3Want land far away? Use /t claim outpost instead ($500). See Outposts.

This area is too close to another town.

Why it happens

Towns must stay at least 5 town blocks away from another town's land and from its home block. Towns in the same nation are exempt.

How to fix it

  1. 1Move further away. Check the live map to see neighbouring borders.
  2. 2Join the same nation as your neighbour, or invite them into yours.

This area has already been claimed by: <town>

Why it happens

Another town owns this chunk. You can't claim over someone else's land.

How to fix it

  1. 1Pick a different spot.
  2. 2Use /t here to see who owns the land you're standing on.

Selected area contains no valid plots.

Why it happens

Nothing in your selection can be claimed. It's already yours, owned by another town, or too close to a town.

How to fix it

  1. 1Move to fresh Wilderness right next to your border and use /t claim.

Selected area is not part of your town.

Why it happens

You tried to unclaim or manage land your town doesn't own.

How to fix it

  1. 1Stand inside your own town's land. Check with /t here.

You cannot unclaim your homeblock, use '/town set homeblock' to move your homeblock.

Why it happens

The home block is the heart of your town and can't be removed.

How to fix it

  1. 1Stand in another chunk you own and run /t set homeblock.
  2. 2Then go back and unclaim the old one.

The following coordinate(s) cannot be claimed because they contain too much ocean biome.

Why it happens

Chunks that are mostly ocean (or another unwanted biome) can't be claimed.

How to fix it

  1. 1Claim land that's mostly on shore instead.

You cannot claim this townblock: X seconds remaining on cooldown.

Why it happens

This chunk was unclaimed recently and is on a short cooldown.

How to fix it

  1. 1Wait for the timer to run out, then try again.

You cannot own more than X outposts.

Why it happens

Your town has reached its outpost limit.

How to fix it

  1. 1Unclaim an old outpost first with /t unclaim outpost.
