Choosing where to found your town
Check the map, the borders, the resources and the room to grow before you found.
2 min read 5 sections
Your town's location is hard to change later: its first chunk (the home block) is where everything starts. Take ten minutes to choose it well.
๐บ๏ธ 1. Look at the live map
- Open the live map and look at the town borders around the spot you like.
- Towny won't let you claim within 5 chunks (80 blocks) of another town's land, and new towns can't be founded too close to another town's home block.
- Look for a spot with free land all around: you will need it to grow.
๐ 2. Leave room to grow
Each resident gives your town 8 more chunks. A town of 10 players can hold 80 chunks: that's a square of about 9 ร 9 chunks (144 ร 144 blocks). Plan for it.
Claim blocking is forbidden
Settling right against another town to box it in, or claiming to stop someone from growing, breaks the rules. Keep a healthy distance from your neighbours: it also avoids border disputes.
๐ฒ 3. Check the resources
| Look for | Why |
|---|---|
| ๐ Water (river, lake, coast) | Farms, fishing, a port, and it looks great |
| ๐ณ Trees | Wood for the first builds, before you have a tree farm |
| ๐พ Flat land | Easy to build a town centre and fields |
| โฐ๏ธ Varied terrain nearby | Stone, a view, and a nice skyline |
Tip
Ores aren't a criterion: the Mining world is there for that, with no PvP and keep inventory.
๐งญ 4. Think about getting there
- Players reach towns with
/t spawn <town>, so distance from spawn doesn't matter much. - Being near other friendly towns helps trade and forming a nation.
- Remember: the Wilderness around your town has PvP on. Claims protect what's inside.
