Protecting your items and builds

Concrete permission examples, and the common mistakes to avoid before inviting someone.

1 min read 3 sections

In a town, everything is protected by permissions: who can build, destroy, switch (open doors, chests, levers) and use items (buckets, flint and steelโ€ฆ). Here is how to use them well.

๐Ÿงฑ The golden rules

  • ๐Ÿฐ Never leave anything in the Wilderness: nothing protects it and PvP is on.
  • ๐Ÿก Keep your valuables on your own plot, not on shared town land.
  • ๐Ÿ” Give the smallest permission that does the job.
  • ๐Ÿงน Remove access you no longer need.

๐Ÿ“‹ Examples

You want toโ€ฆCommand
Let a friend build with you everywhere/res friend add <player>
Let one person build on this plot only/plot trust add <player>
Let friends build on this plot/plot set perm friend build on
Open a shop where visitors can open doors/plot set perm outsider switch on
Let all residents use a public farm/plot set perm town switch on
Check who can do what here/plot perm

โš ๏ธ Common mistakes

  • โŒ Giving `switch` to outsiders on a plot with chests: switch opens chests too. Keep shops and storage on separate plots.
  • โŒ Adding someone as a friend "just to try": a friend can build and destroy on all your plots.
  • โŒ Storing everything on town land: every resident allowed by the town can reach it.
  • โŒ Forgetting the item-use permission: with it, someone can pour lava or water on your plot.
  • โŒ Trusting a new player with the town's assistant rank too soon.

Before inviting someone

Run /plot perm on each of your plots, move your chests to a plot where only you have access, and give the smallest permission possible. You can always add more later.
